Remember, Honor, Teach

The enduring mission of Wreaths Across America is guided by three words: Remember, Honor, and Teach. These are not ceremonial phrases, but deliberate actions that are carried out each year.

Remember the fallen

Volunteers are instructed to say each name aloud before laying a wreath, an act that affirms the individual's life behind every headstone. Many pause to salute while others bow their heads in silence. In that moment, memory becomes active, and sacrifice becomes personal.

Honor those who serve

Families, veterans, active organizations, and the broader community line the cemetery paths. At Arlington this year, more than 10,000 people stood along the driveway, preparing to take part in the ceremony. Each volunteer received a single wreath to lay on a headstone.

Teach younger generations the value of freedom

By attending and participating in Wreaths Across America wreath laying ceremonies, children witness firsthand the cost of freedom and the respect owed to those who defend it. This lesson is taught not only through words, but through presence, service, and remembrance.

As an Army veteran himself, Jay Watkins recognizes that the sacrifices and heroism of his fellow servicemembers cannot be overlooked.

“These soldiers and their families made the ultimate sacrifice. It shows they are remembered. They are honored. Teaching our children about them and that they will never be forgotten... I have already thrown my hat into the ring for [delivering wreaths] next year at Arlington. It's a feeling I will never forget.”

The significance of Jay’s long trip became evident upon his arrival. He felt the gravity of the mission as soon as he entered the grave site.

"From the moment you pull off the highway in the escort and see the headstones, the emotions hit. As you pull through the gate of Arlington National Cemetery, you are on sacred ground. I had 3,900 soldiers and their families behind me, precious cargo. It feels like you're bringing them home. Even pulling in and driving to your location is an enormous feeling. When you place that wreath and say that name, it's very emotional. You are honoring them. You are saying that they matter, that their sacrifice matters. That they will never be forgotten. And their story lives on. Honor their sacrifice, remember their story, teach it to future generations, never forget, and keep moving forward. It was the greatest honor.”
